GAC Trumpchi GA5 PHEV

2026-09-24 09:40:00

The GAC Trumpchi GA5 PHEV is a plug-in hybrid sedan launched by the GAC Trumpchi brand in 2015. Serving as an early pioneer in the brand’s foray into the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, the GA5 PHEV was developed to tap into licence-plate-restricted Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities via then-emerging hybrid technology, marking GAC Trumpchi’s initial technical exploration and early product development in the electrified mobility space.

Model Overview

Built on GAC Trumpchi’s first-generation sedan platform, the GA5 PHEV was positioned as a mid-size D-segment plug-in hybrid sedan and once served as a key showcase for the brand to elevate its technical credentials.

Market tags: Plug-in hybrid sedan, quota-restricted city commuter, Trumpchi technology trailblazer.

Design positioning: Dimensionally, the car measures approximately 4,800 mm in length, 1,819 mm in width, and 1,484 mm in height, with a 2,710 mm wheelbase. The exterior retained the brand's early understated, mature design language, whilst the cabin layout struck a balance between executive and family practicality.

Product core: At its heart, the car featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain pairing a 1.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, engineered primarily for short-distance urban all-electric driving alongside long-distance petrol-electric hybrid cruising to cater to early-stage NEV market demands.

Development History

Background: Driven by nationwide policies actively promoting new energy vehicles in 2015, GAC Trumpchi swiftly engineered and mass-produced the GA5 PHEV on the established GA5 platform by integrating an electric motor and traction battery pack, aiming to capture market share in green-car entitlement catalogues across major cities like Shanghai.

Key milestones:

2015–2016: The GA5 PHEV was officially launched in two variants—Elite Edition and Premium Edition—priced between RM199,300 and RM219,300 (before subsidies). Benefiting from complimentary vehicle registration and purchase tax exemption policies, it secured decent sales volume across East China.

Current status (2026): The model has long been phased out and completely withdrawn from the sales line-up. As GAC Trumpchi shifted its focus towards modern nameplates like the EMKOO, the Shadow series, and dedicated NEV architectures, the GA5 PHEV fulfilled its historical role as a transitional technical stepping stone in the brand's evolution.

Market Performance

Competitive landscape: During its production run, the GA5 PHEV went head-to-head with rivals such as the BYD Qin DM in licence-plate-restricted cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou. Constrained by early-generation battery technology and powertrain packaging, its overall market competitiveness and pricing power remained modest.

Owner feedback: Owners generally commended its planted chassis and decent ride and handling, reflecting Trumpchi’s proven chassis tuning capabilities. Nonetheless, some owners expressed frustration over its modest pure electric range (NEDC 50 km) and the difficulty in sourcing replacement parts for maintenance and repairs.

Core Technologies

Powertrain: It utilised a distinctive "1.0L engine + electric motor" setup, designed to handle daily commuting needs through range-extender logic and parallel drive modes.

Electric control platform: Equipped with a traction battery pack of roughly 13 kWh supporting AC slow charging, this represented an early, significant step for the brand in embracing plug-in hybrid electrification under contemporary technical constraints.

Chassis system: Retaining the petrol-powered GA5’s underpinnings, it featured a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension layout, offering competitive handling dynamics compared to other domestic brand counterparts in its class.

Future Plans

As of 2026, there are no successor plans for the Trumpchi GA5 PHEV. GAC Trumpchi has fully pivoted its R&D resources towards its proprietary "Trumpchi Smart Electric Technology i-GTEC" and new-generation dedicated PHEV/HEV model line-ups (such as the Trumpchi ES9, E9, and beyond). As an early testbed for the brand's electrification journey, the GA5 PHEV provided foundational engineering data and technical learnings for Trumpchi's subsequent hybrid line-up. For the remaining units still on the road, the brand primarily maintains basic spare parts supply, with the nameplate no longer holding a place in Trumpchi’s long-term product roadmap.
